What isn't Serving You Could be Breaking You

How’s that for a truth bomb?

As a leader and coach, one of the toughest questions for me to ask is, “how is this behaviour or belief serving you?”. It’s a tough one to ask, because I know it risks triggering some defensiveness and discomfort in my clients; yet it’s an important question to ask as it has the power to reveal a necessary truth that could help someone finally pivot enough to make a difference in their lives — maybe even set them on a path of inner healing.

How do I know this? Because I had to answer that same question for myself not too long ago. And though the answer revealed a truth so hard to face that my reaction was both emotionally and physically draining, it was the answer that provided me with the most clarity I’d had in a very long time.

So today, while sitting comfortably behind my laptop screen, I put the question (in its various forms) out there for anyone who’s ready to grapple with it:

  • How is your current situation serving you?

  • How is your behaviour in this current situation serving you?

  • How are your current beliefs serving you?

  • How have your choices till now served you?

And if determining how any of the above may or may not be serving you isn’t enough, consider this…how may these actually be breaking you? Your spirit, you well-being, and all your incredible potential?

And finally, when the answer reveals itself to you, please be kind to yourself. Hard as some truth bombs may be to face, it’s important that what you do with the truth ultimately does serve you.
